Three or four times a year, Mercury appears to move backward through the sky and the internet collectively loses its mind. People delay launches, postpone hard conversations, refuse to buy phones. Some of that caution is well-earned. A great deal of it is theatre.
The retrograde is real. It does affect things. But the actual astrological meaning is more specific — and more useful — than "do not do anything." It is a request to slow, re-check, and revisit. Not a request to freeze your life for three weeks.
Here is what the transit does to decision-making, what is actually worth caution, and what is fine to do anyway.
The planet is not physically reversing. From Earth's vantage it appears to. The orbit lines up in a way that creates an optical reversal for about three weeks at a time, three or four times a year.
Astrologically, Mercury governs communication, contracts, transit, and the small mechanics of daily life. When it stations retrograde, those domains get squirrelly. Messages get misread. Documents need re-reading. Travel plans shift. The texture of communication becomes friction-heavy.
The period is not punishment. It is review time. Mercury retrograde is the auditor whose job is not to attack you, but to make you double-check your books.
A short list of things where retrograde caution earns its keep.
Not "do not sign anything." Just: re-read it. Have someone else read it. The classic retrograde failure is not cosmic interference — it is a clause you would have caught if you had looked once more.
The breakup text. The resignation email. The big confession. These can absolutely happen during retrograde, but the odds of misinterpretation are higher. Write it. Sleep on it. Re-read it in the morning. If you still mean it, send.
The "do not buy electronics" trope is overstated. But if you are making a major purchase that is hard to undo, this is not the moment to skip the return-policy fine print.
Things people pointlessly delay during retrograde.
Retrograde is excellent for revising, refining, completing. The "re-" words — review, redo, return, reconnect — are the transit's specialty. If you are finishing, not starting fresh, retrograde is often the better window.
Old colleagues, lapsed friends, ex-mentors who reappear during retrograde are not bad omens. They are the energy of the transit doing its job. Reconnection is on-theme.
Groceries. Doctor's appointments. The thousand small choices that compose an ordinary week. Retrograde is not asking you to opt out of your life. It is just asking you to read the ingredients.
